Strategies For Building Websites Correctly
Building a website these days is much more involved than most people realize. I could spend hours and countless blogs explaining all of the necessary steps required for building a successful website. Ah, successful, now that is something that everyone will define differently, hence the challenge! Moving forward, I will be providing future blogs that do examine individual steps in this process, so stay tuned and make sure to follow along!
But, for today I am writing on the “Importance Of Building A Website Correctly – Step One”.
So, what are these “first-steps” in this first step?
I really enjoy the process of sitting with new clients to discuss their goals and objectives regarding their new website build. Every client I have encountered over the many years of working in this industry have differed in their goals, including what they expect from their website when complete. However, some things are consistent across the board, regarding what most clients tend to seek, such as:
- Great Looking Website (everyone’s opinion is different)
- More Traffic and Conversions (every category or market is different)
- Functionality and Responsiveness (these are impacted by client design requests)
Even though designs will differ, and opinions on various aspects of functionality will differ, these 3 items seem to be consistent requests from our clients. That makes sense. But, how do you include the directives of your client on items they wish to include in their website that you know as an experienced developer are not in their best interest? Maybe the font they selected is not easy to read, or they want it placed over images which also makes it difficult to read. Maybe the design for the placement of certain features they want does not maximize conversion opportunities. There are always challenges when it comes to blending the wishes of the client while maximizing the results of the site when launched. Here are some essential steps in helping to improve the overall process and end result for your client.
Communication is essential when working with your clients. I always enjoy this process because I freely discuss the importance of certain items from a design and functionality standpoint, so I always like to create a very open and environment for communication.
- Setting Goals & Objectives
Sitting with your client and actually discussing their goals for the website is extremely important. I always like to write down what they are trying to accomplish, and what their priorities are. From these meetings, I am able to sit with my staff and discuss the client’s goals and provide an assessment on the things we need to do from a programming standpoint, along with pointing out any issues that may arise based on what they are trying to accomplish and what design items they are seeking. It also helps us to plan our developing more efficiently, so the end result is achieved for our client.
- Honesty & Transparency
I like to tie these two items together because I think they go hand-in-hand. Having a relationship with your client based on honesty and transparency is critical. One of our core values at The Rojas Group is to provide complete transparency and an open line of communication with our clients. Having a transparent approach to web development also helps keep everyone on the same page and it allows issues to identified earlier in the process, often times before it is too late to change, and solutions are much easier to accomplish
We always consider these items as the First Step in successfully designing and developing websites for our clients. You can’t go wrong with open communication, setting goals and objectives and discussing the reality of all, and keeping the process transparent with your clients along the way. The end result is always better, the client is always happier and you will receive more referrals for your business!
